You just found out you’re pregnant, or maybe you’re already 32 weeks in and suddenly realizing you haven’t thought about photos at all yet, and now you’re Googling “when to book newborn photos” at 11 pm while your partner sleeps.
First: you’re not too late. Second: this is way simpler than the internet is making it seem.
Here’s everything you actually need to know about when to book newborn photos in McKinney.
The short answer? During your second trimester, somewhere around 28 to 32 weeks, is ideal.
Not because there’s a hard deadline. Not because your newborn photographer is automatically going to turn you away if you call later than that. But because newborn photographers tend to book in advance. Booking early means you’re locked in with the photographer you love, and you’re not adding one more thing to your mental load in those final weeks as you scramble to try and find a photographer. Booking early means we have time to connect and plan before your baby arrives so that the session itself feels easy and familiar.
That said, if you’re reading this at 38 weeks or with a baby already in your arms, please keep reading. There’s still a path forward.

Most lifestyle newborn photographers, myself included, schedule sessions within the first two to three weeks after birth. This is the window when babies are sleepiest, curliest, and most content being held for long stretches. It’s also when that particular newness is most palpable – the way they tuck their knees up, the way they fit perfectly in the crook of your arm.
But here’s something I want you to hear clearly: **there is no perfect age.**
A four-week-old is still a newborn. A six-week-old still has those tiny hands and that milk-drunk softness. I’ve photographed babies at two weeks and babies at eight and a half weeks, and beautiful images happen at every single stage.
What matters far more than the exact date is that you feel ready – physically, emotionally, however that looks for you after birth.

This is one of the most common worries I hear, and I want to put it to rest completely.
When you book with me, we schedule a tentative session date based on your due date. When your baby actually arrives, you reach out, and we adjust accordingly and schedule your session for when your baby is 2-3 weeks. It really is that simple. Babies don’t follow strict calendars – and neither do I.
If your baby arrives three weeks early, we will schedule early. If your due date comes and goes and you’re still waiting, we adjust. There’s no penalty, no lost deposit scramble, no stress. You’ve got enough going on.
Booking early ensures your baby has a session spot, whether they come early, late, or right on time.
Reach out anyway.
Seriously – send the message. The worst I can say is that I’m fully booked for your window, and even then, I can point you toward other McKinney newborn photographers whose work I respect.
But often? There’s still time. Especially if your baby is under 4 weeks, we very likely have options. And even beyond that window, I offer milestone sessions and family sessions that capture this season beautifully, even if the typical newborn window has passed.
The only thing I’d gently encourage you not to do is wait until your baby is six weeks old and then decide it’s too late to document anything. It isn’t.

Less than you think. Here’s my honest list:
Style fit matters: Look at a photographer’s portfolio and ask yourself: Does this feel like me? Not just pretty, but like *you*. You’re going to be in these images. You want to feel at home in them.
Communication matters. You should feel comfortable reaching out with questions, changes, and the occasional panicked text at 39 weeks. If the inquiry process feels cold or transactional, or if it takes ages to get a response, pay attention to that.
Flexibility matters. Especially for newborns. Birth is unpredictable. Your photographer should build that into the way they work, not treat it as an inconvenience.
Price matters – but it isn’t everything. Newborn photos are one of the few things from this season you’ll actually have in ten years. Factor that into how you weigh the investment.
Follower count, preset aesthetic, how many props they have – none of that makes it into your final gallery in any meaningful way.
If you’re local to McKinney, Frisco, Allen, Prosper, or anywhere in the North Dallas area, I’d love to be the person you reach out to.
I shoot lifestyle newborn sessions, which means I come to your home (or you can come to my natural light studio), I work with the natural light you already have, and I follow your baby’s lead completely. No posing pillows. No elaborate setups or busy props. Just your family, the way you actually are, documented in a beautiful way that holds up for a lifetime.
Sessions are intentionally unhurried. There’s no shot list to get through, no pressure to have your baby behave a certain way, and no expectation that you have your house or yourself together. You just show up and love your baby. I’ll handle everything else.

If you’re expecting and you’re somewhere in that second or third trimester – now is a great time to reach out. We’ll get a tentative date on the calendar, I’ll send you everything you need to prepare, and then you can check this completely off your list and get back to building the nursery.
And if you’re already postpartum and reading this with a baby on your chest -reach out anyway. Let’s see what we can do.
