Newborn photography should feel simple, beautiful, and true to your family. Here’s everything you need to know before booking your newborn photographer in McKinney.
Bringing your baby home changes just about everything – your routine, the quiet, the way your world suddenly feels smaller, a little noisier, and way more meaningful. At Nicole Berkley Portraits, your trusted newborn photographer in McKinney, TX, we focus on documenting those first days honestly; the calm, the chaos, and all the little moments in between.
My goal is to make newborn photography feel effortless and meaningful, whether your session takes place in your home or in my light-filled lifestyle studio in McKinney.
This guide will help you understand what newborn photography really is, how to prepare, what to expect, and how to choose the experience that fits your family.

Newborn photography isn’t just about pretty pictures; it’s about preserving the feeling of your baby’s earliest days. Those quiet stretches of time when everything feels new, overwhelming, and full of heart. My job is to help you remember them in a way that feels authentic, timeless, and real.
What I love most about McKinney is how families here value connection. Whether you’re new to the area or have deep roots, there’s a genuine sense of pride in home and family that shows up naturally in photos – no staging or cheesy props needed. One of my beautiful, natural light studios is nestled right in historic downtown McKinney, surrounded by classic frame houses and wide, welcoming porches. The light, bright, modern farmhouse design of the studio perfectly captures the spirit of this city – warm, timeless, and effortlessly beautiful. Whether your session takes place at home or in the studio, McKinney is the perfect backdrop for photographs full of love, light, and authenticity; images that will look just as beautiful twenty years from now as they do today.

Your newborn session typically takes place when your baby is around 2–3 weeks old. That’s the sweet spot where your baby is still tiny enough for gentle posing, but you’ve had a little time to settle in at home and adjust to your new normal. Because I use a simple, baby-led approach (no uncomfortable or contorted poses), there’s some flexibility if your little one arrives early or late, or if you need a little more time before we shoot. I can easily accommodate a newborn session up to 3-months old, so your baby is not too old for newborn photos.
That said, it’s always best to book in advance. As we get closer to your due date, availability becomes more limited, and I can’t always guarantee last-minute openings. Many families reserve their session 2–4 months before the baby’s arrival, and that’s true for many of the best newborn photographers in the DFW area. Booking early ensures your spot is secure and gives us time to plan every detail. No rushing at 38 weeks to try and find an available photographer for your baby’s session.
Reserving your due date on my calendar ensures your baby has a spot, whether they come early, late, or right on time. Your due date acts as a placeholder for your future session, and after I reach a certain number of due dates reserved for that month, I stop accepting clients. This may not be the exact process for every newborn photographer, but this is how my process ensures I am able to give every single client the care and attention they deserve.
Your session will be calm, relaxed, and completely tailored to your family. Whether we’re in your home or in my studio, I follow your baby’s rhythm – pausing for feeding, diaper changes, or cuddles whenever they need it. Sessions are focused and unhurried, typically flowing naturally in about an hour, with your baby in your arms where they belong.
There are no unnatural poses, no elaborate setups, and no pressure to achieve a specific look. The session is built around connection – you holding your baby, your family being together, the quiet and real moments that are already happening. That’s where the most meaningful photos live.
For every newborn session, I provide soft wardrobe pieces and cozy wraps for your baby, all in a simple neutral palette. And once you’re booked, you’ll receive a prep guide that walks you through everything – what to wear, what to expect, and how to make the most of your time together.

Your baby’s safety is – and always will be – my highest priority. At Nicole Berkley Portraits, every session is guided by gentle, baby-led posing in a calm, cozy environment where your little one’s comfort comes first. All wraps, outfits, and props are carefully laundered and sanitized between sessions using newborn-safe products.
I’m trained in safe newborn handling and posing techniques, and you can rest easy knowing your days-old baby is in capable, experienced, and compassionate hands.

McKinney families often tell me their favorite part of the process is how simple it feels. Whether they’re new parents or returning for baby number two, the focus is always the same: connection, comfort, and photographs that last.

When looking for a newborn photographer, you want someone experienced, calm, and safety-trained. You also want someone who can capture real emotion — not stiff posing or heavy props. Look for:
